Malcolm Jones BA (Hons)
Malcolm is a military historian who specializes in the campaigns and battles of the Peninsular War in Spain, where he now lives, and tours of Gibraltar. Malcolm has been interested in military history since his childhood, especially the Second World War, Indian Mutiny and the campaigns of the British army in the 18th and 19th centuries. He is a Member of the Society for Army Historical Research and the former editor of the Magazine for the Friends of the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum.
Malcolm left school to join the Royal Signals where he served in Northern Ireland and Germany. On leaving the Army he moved to Bristol and obtained his degree in History. This was followed by working in management in the UK and the Middle East. In 1991, after four-and-a-half years in Iraq, Malcolm decided to take a few months out touring Spain, Portugal and North Africa.
The trip took seven months in a campervan much of it following in Wellington’s footsteps, and visiting the other sites of the war; from the Pyrenees and A Coruña, to Cadiz and Gibraltar. Malcolm fell in love with the Spanish history and culture; the majestic beauty of the Pyrenees; the rugged wildness of Extremadura; the sites and history of Gibraltar. Since then he has been a regular visitor to Gibraltar (where he was born) and conducts tours of the Rock’s history from the Moorish invasion of Spain in 711, through the capture of the Rock in 1704, the Great Siege (1779-83), and up to the end of the Second World War. He is a Member of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.
Before his trip Malcolm had known from his reading of the problems Wellington and his men faced campaigning in Spain and Portugal, but it was not until visiting the locations that the realisation dawned; the vast distances involved, the fortified towns that needed capturing and a terrain and climate of unbelievable extremes. He could not fail to respect the men who carried out these amazing feats.
The seed was sown. This was the start of many future visits to the battlefields and the study of Wellington’s campaign. It was from this time that Malcolm fell in love with Spain, and felt the Iberian Peninsula was where he belonged. Finally in 2003 he realized his dream and moved to Extremadura, to live close to the battlefields of his interest. He now does what he likes doing best – visiting the battlefields, sharing his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for Wellington’s men, their battles and campaigns by conducting Peninsular War Battlefield Tours.
Malcolm received his Guiding Badge from the Patron of the Guild, Professor Richard Holmes, at Woolwich on Saturday 28th November 2009.
