As battlefield guides, we invariably will take questions on the weapons of the era we are guiding and the impact they may or may not have had on the outcome of a battle or campaign. As such, this session will cover the evolution of firearms and the changes in rifle operating systems, definitions and terminology, target effects, ballistics and some of the “so what” we are expected to be experts in. This session is part of a series that will cover the evolution of all types of weapons and associated tactics from edged through other small arms, artillery, mortars, demolition charges, booby trap switches, mines, sniping, tank, and anti-tank weapons. This will be both a refresher to experts in their field and useful to those attempting Assignment 1 to appreciate how questions on weapons can be answered with the “so what” element crucial to being a guide that understands the unrelenting pursuit of excellence in one’s profession.
