Guild Webinar – Sailors’ Weapons – Naval Guns and Gunnery

November 5th, 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Fire from the sea has been around for ages (Edward III’s siege of Calais, anyone?)  – and has gone under a number of titles; shore bombardment, naval gunfire support, naval surface fire support, to name but a few.  Using historical examples, Tim will discuss the background, the capabilities, and limitations, of ships and their weaponry in attacking targets on land, as well as giving an insight into the processes involved in successfully delivering the desired effect upon the enemy (or, to put it crudely, hitting the target), although he’ll omit the finer technical details (which were drilled into him as a former naval gunnery officer) in favour of matters more likely to be encountered when guides are “on the ground” with clients.

Ship-to-ship engagements add another layer of complexity, and are a matter for another time, and the three-dimensional problem of ship-borne air defence is more challenging still!  If your clients seek to look into these aspects of warfare, this webinar would need the rest of the evening (or more)!
